Since it\u2019s been carnaval here, I thought I\u2019d share some behind the scenes contributions for last year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.derijten.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">De Rijten<\/a> carnaval-themed parade float: &#8220;The FeastBeast Breaks Loose&#8221;. I worked closely with head of design Maarten van der Velden to help with the character design of the FeastBeast. I&#8217;m specifically highlighting the head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-2e3353e9 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mattyjorissen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Brabantsedag-2025-Rijten-FeestBeest-hoofd-01-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Brabantsedag 2025 - De Rijten: FeestBeest character design\" class=\"uag-image-1887\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" title=\"Brabantsedag 2025 Rijten FeestBeest hoofd 01\" role=\"img\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the frontal main shape, the idea was to visually create a dynamic explosion from the center of the head outwards. Like the personification of a party erupting, with lots of festive shapes breaking out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of multiple mouths and eyes originally started with the idea to suggest movement, as if the beast is dancing wildly, in the spirit of animation smears. But we concluded this wouldn\u2019t read well in sculpture form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We did decide to keep multiple mouths and eyes for a few reasons. To give the beast its own unique character. To make it not look too much like a specific animal. And we figured with multiple mouths and eyes, a beast could party more loudly through more means of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tried some variations with a 4th eye, but it pushed the design into more of an alien monster territory. Might\u2019ve gone too far on that one. That\u2019s ok, though. Often I find it\u2019s good to push ideas too far and find out how much to pull it back, rather than taking no risk and not pushing it enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pupils being shaped like upside down crosses are a reference to the fight of the church against carnaval, the theme of carnaval turning things upside down and to make the eyes more animal-like. But they did not make the final cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div\n\t\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"wp-block-uagb-image-gallery uagb-block-acb4c65e\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\tstyle=\"\"\n\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div
