Painting a cat-tailed lark with ink

I like to paint these little cards as warm-up exercises. It frees up a moment to practise and experiment with the ink & brush, as well as frees you up to get comfortable before painting for realsies.

This tiny bird character is from the animated short ‘From The Snow-Covered Hill‘, a 2D animated short film I co-write and co-directed.

This is the short’s teaser trailer, which I also edited. In it, you can see the bird come to life:

Synopsis:
Left behind at an isolated boarding school, young Will quickly becomes a target for bullying. Only the friendship from a small bird brings him solace. But as the bullying worsens, Will’s means of escaping the world grow darker..

This film is a little more serious, dark and dramatic story, which made it an interesting experience to execute in animation.

On the film, I worked as a writer, director, animator, character designer, clean up artist and editor.
